"Turtschaninoff puts traditional elements of female magic to effective dramatic use, especially in the climactic (and climatic) conflict between Jai’sįather and the Sisters. "Utterly satisfying and completely different from standard YA fantasy, this Finnish import seems primed to win over American readers." "'Where YA fantasy can start to feel a little same-y, Maresi stands out for its startling originality, and for the frightening plausibility of the dangerous world it creates." "It's hard not to be impressed with Turtschaninoff's magical world." At the same time, it feels authentically ancient and mythic." Its unwavering feminism is resolutely modern, resonating with a range of texts from Ursula Le Guin’s 2001 Tales from Earthsea to Disney’s Frozen. “The novel is at once contemporary and timeless.

Stenn moves through each period of her life, from her days of poverty in Brooklyn to her breakthrough in acting and subsequent Hollywood career to her decades of reclusive retirement, contextualizing Clara’s decisions and life circumstances. Stenn’s biography of Clara captures her talent as an actress and her alluring star persona while examining Bow’s tumultuous private life that differed wildly from her glamourous screen image. Only working in pictures for a decade before an early retirement and retreat from public life in her late 20s, Clara won over the hearts of millions of movie fans around the world and cemented herself as one of the most recognizable sex symbols ever to grace the screen. During the peak of her popularity, Clara Bow was Hollywood’s biggest box office star and a worldwide 1920s cultural phenomenon. Time to get kids back where they belong - up chimneys, down mines, and tied to the printing presses! If you can pick up a brick to smash a car window, then you can build me a textile factory, son. That's what a proper childhood's all about isn't it? This is the 21st century after all and these unruly little bastards have been milking post-Victorian sentimentality for all it's worth for way too long. And have to write several titles at once to make a decent living. I see no reason why children as young as six, seven, or even three shouldn't be allowed to produce corporate comic books to relentless monthly deadlines. That is the moment that I became a super-villain. Tom Peyer phoned me up and read page after page of these insane letters. You know that Doom Force thing I did recently for D.C.? - the pisstake of X-Force, right? Well, eighty percent of the people who sent letters of comment in on the story actually took the thing seriously! They didn't see the joke! It's horrific. I love to work in the comics medium - I really do - and I've realised that a total contempt for the intelligence of the audience is the key to success. When I started reading this novel I had really high expectations and I initially found myself enjoying both storylines despite them being completely different. This Spanish city is hands down one of the favorite places I was able to visit during my stay in Spain eight years ago and Court Of Lions without doubt brought back great memories. This novel by Jane Johnson is partly set in the 15th century, partly in the present and predominantly takes place in Granada. I always love a good historical fiction read and when I first heard about Court Of Lions the story just ticked al the right boxes for me. *** A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by Netgalley and Head Of Zeus in exchange for an honest review. “History was rather wasted on the young, who had yet to discover that looking back could sometimes be a lot more instructive than looking forward.” Genre: Historical Fiction, Contemporary, Romance 2023 Netgalley And Edelweiss Reading Challenge.2017 Netgalley And Edelweiss Reading Challenge. |
